Nick - “No matter what you do, have fun doing it!”

The Passion Behind Daikon Games

Nick from Daikon Games, like many indie developers, is fueled by a long-standing passion for gaming. Reflecting on his journey, Nick recalls, "Video games are my favorite form of media, and I’ve known I wanted to make them since I was very young. I’ve experimented with game development for decades as a hobby, but it was only in recent years that I started to get serious about it." This passion remains the primary source of his motivation and dedication to the craft, even as he navigates the complexities of solo development.

From Hobbyist to Indie Developer

Nick's journey into game development began as a hobby in his childhood, crafting fan games inspired by The Legend of Zelda and other beloved franchises. "The early experience in programming led me into a computer science degree and eventually a career in software development," he shares. Although software development gave him the technical foundation for his projects, Nick was drawn more to the creativity of game design than the rigid nature of enterprise software. "The games industry doesn’t seem like a very comfortable place to work, so the indie route, even with the challenges, appealed to me. It meant I could create games on my own terms, even if that meant essentially working two jobs."

The Genesis of Chico and the Magic Orchards

His current project, Chico and the Magic Orchards, emerged as a creative challenge during Retrograde Jam. "The jam was about making something that seemed like an authentic 'lost classic' game for a retro console," Nick explains. Choosing the Game Boy as his platform allowed him to blend nostalgic elements with modern gameplay, creating a charming experience with "cute character design and retro-inspired camera and controls." When Chico won first place in the jam, he recognized it as the perfect opportunity to expand it into a full-fledged game.

Lessons Learned Through Solo Development

As a solo developer, Nick has encountered his fair share of challenges, which have become valuable lessons. Reflecting on Chico's development, he says, "I learned the importance of playtesting and player feedback. Prior to launching, only a few people in the world had played the game. After it launched, as I watched various streamers play, flaws large and small became immediately apparent." Since then, he has integrated early playtesting into his workflow, believing it will lead to better games from the outset.

Balancing Creativity and Technical Expertise

Balancing the creative and technical aspects of game development can be tricky, and Nick has found that flexibility is key. "I find the best way for me to work is to follow my mood. When I’m feeling artistic, I work on art; when I’m in a technical mindset, I work on code." As a programmer by trade, Nick naturally enjoys technical work but also finds joy in creating art and music. "Generally, I do better work when I’m not forcing myself, so I try to work on whatever feels right at the time."

Future Projects and Creative Vision

Looking ahead, Nick has exciting projects in development. "I’m currently working on Chico’s Rebound, a sequel/spin-off to Chico and the Magic Orchards, which will take the same characters and some gameplay mechanics and reframe them into a block-breaking puzzle game," he says. Additionally, he’s working on The Song of Asirra, an action-adventure inspired by Zelda II that aims to expand his portfolio with a new style of gameplay and storytelling.

Advice for Aspiring Indie Developers

For aspiring solo developers, Nick’s advice is straightforward but powerful: "Don’t be discouraged by seeing the amazing work of other developers. Rather than comparing your work to others, compare it to your own work from the past and strive to always do better than you did before. These skills take time to grow, but anyone is capable of it." Nick's journey exemplifies the dedication, creativity, and resilience that defines the indie game development path.
